Surprise! The one you know already is that number tracking the times you’ve travelled around the sun or the one on your driver’s license - your chronological age. It does not happen passively and really requires you to apply yourself to your growth. If you haven’t yet heard, you have two ages. It enables us to take responsibility for ourselves, to set clear boundaries with others, and to show up in relationships (personal and professional) in a manner that brings out the best in others. Growing up emotionally is key to leadership: self-leadership, team leadership, and organisational leadership.

The unintended consequence of paying attention to my emotional age, and being aware of the difference between chronological and emotional age, is that I have amazing relationships with people across different generations (Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, baby boomers, etc.), and I’ve learnt how to treat others as equal thinkers regardless of the age difference between us.

Through trial and error, I’ve found ways that work best for me: reading, taking short courses (pre-recorded online courses and real-time facilitated courses), watching documentaries, going to museums, being part of Toastmasters, and having a personal “board of directors” (made up of coaches, therapists, mentors, and accountability partners). Self-development: I love learning! I’ve committed myself to be a lifelong student. It’s been challenging for me because concealing myself as a child was a way of showing respect to elders, so I’ve had to unlearn that behaviour and learn to how to be respectfully transparent. Transparency is about inviting others into your truth which leads them to trust you. Transparency has been the most challenging for me. Self-management: Daniel Goleman’s research on emotional intelligence found these areas to be key in self-management: self-control, transparency, adaptability, achievement, initiative and optimism.Self-awareness: I keep a journal I see a therapist and a coach I’ve taken scientifically reliable assessments like StrengthsFinder to understand my strengths I have people around me who show me my blind spots and being part of Toastmasters has given me the ability to be feedback fit, so when people show me my blind spots, I’m always grateful instead of defensive.I do that through being practicing three areas of emotional intelligence: In the same way that I pay attention to my chronological age (through birthdays), I now also pay attention to my emotional age to see in which area of my life I need to grow up and mature. Appreciating this has been one of the reasons that I transitioned my career from digital marketing to adult development: coaching, educating and consulting. Unlike physical maturity and growth that happens automatically, emotional growth and maturity often needs us to be deliberate and sometimes a major life event might push us there. I also empathized with how he never had it figured out, he was developing as I was developing. I could connect to the child in him, the teenager, and the young father that must have been scared when he found out he’d contributed to making me (I was his first child). I remember when I first understood this, it helped me see my dad’s humanity. Understanding the difference between chronological age and emotional age has been freeing! It has helped me humanize myself and others, especially those who are older than me, or whose roles in organisations, families and society carry the assumptions that they should be emotionally mature.

This also works the other way around, where we treat a young person as if they are immature because of their age, leading to cognitive dissonance when we realize that they are “wise beyond their years”.

That expectation can lead us to put them on a pedestal with high expectations of what they should do instead of seeing their full humanity: that they too are made of strength and struggle, trying to survive and do their best. We often expect leaders and parents’ emotional age to match their chronological age and title. Our emotional age plays out in various areas of our life: at work, in friendships, relationships, parenting, etc. A person’s chronological age, the number of years they’ve been alive, is not necessarily equal to their emotional age, which is how old a person feels and behaves.įor many of us, the age that we write down or type in when we fill in forms doesn’t reflect the age that we feel and behave.
